Why You'll Want To Know About Both Manual Machining And CNC Machining

by Carlos Sullivan

As you might already know, many of the modern machine shops that are out there have recently started focusing on using computer-controlled machining. At the same time, though, older businesses often specialize strictly in using manual machining techniques. If you're involved in the machining business, you will probably want to learn about both manual and CNC machining. These are some of the reasons why you should know about both rather than just one or the other.

There Are Some Cases Where Manual Machining Is Better

You might not really think that you need to learn about manual machining since you might have always heard that CNC machining is better. It's true that CNC machining is better than manual machining in a variety of different ways, but this is not always the case. When working on certain projects, it makes sense to use manual machining instead. For example, if you're only going to be working on one small project, it might not be worth it to program your computer-controlled equipment; instead, you might just want to quickly get a simple job done with manual machining. By learning about both manual and CNC machining, you will then know when you should use each method, and you'll know how to use each method in scenarios when it makes sense.

You'll Need to Be Prepared for Machinery Breakdowns

Computer-controlled machinery can be very reliable and can work very well for lots of projects, but breakdowns can and do happen. If this happens, then you might be happy that you have manual machinery around that you can use to continue working in the meantime. Then, you will not have to worry about everything shutting down until you're able to get your computer-controlled equipment back up and running.

You May Have to Transition to CNC Machining Slowly

Overall, you might be a fan of CNC machining. Because of its many benefits, you might be hoping to switch completely or mostly to CNC machining in your shop at some point or another. However, even though many people find that it's worth the money, CNC machining equipment can be quite expensive. You can continue using more affordable manual equipment while you're slowly investing in different pieces of CNC machinery. Then, you can keep your shop running while you're purchasing CNC machinery in a more budget-friendly way.

As you can see, if you don't already know about both manual machining and CNC machining, you should think about learning about both. If you're involved in the machining business, you'll probably find that you will benefit from knowing about both types of machining.
