If you're about to begin your new job working with quartz rods and tubes, it's important that you avoid on-the-job injuries. Because you'll be working with industrial equipment, in a variety of settings, there will be some risks involved. However, those risks can be reduced if you follow the proper safety procedures. Here are four important steps you should take to keep yourself safe on-the-job.

Protect Your Eyes

When working with quartz, eye safety is one of the most important things you can remember. Your eyes should be protected at all times. Since your eyes will be exposed to extreme heat, flying debris, and noxious gases, you'll need to wear safety goggles whenever you're operating your equipment. However, it's also important for you to wear your safety goggles when walking near, or standing by other equipment in the factory.

Breathe Safely

While you're working with quartz rods and tubes, you'll be exposed to a variety of gases and fumes. Many of those may be harmful to your lungs and respiratory tract. The first step you should take to prevent breathing problems, and lung damage, is to always wear a face mask when you're operating your equipment. It's also important that you work in a well-ventilated area. Ensure that the windows near your work space are open, and that your exhaust fan is operational at all times. If you don't have an exhaust fan, install a small fan that can blow the fumes and gases away from your face and towards the windows.

Avoid Burns

The quartz rods you'll be working with will be hot, which means you can suffer serious burns if you're not careful. To prevent burns, always place the hot end of the rod pointing away from you. This will ensure that the cool end is always closest to your hands. Sparks can fly while you're working with your quartz rods, so avoid wearing clothing made of synthetic material, or shirts that have open pockets. Synthetic clothing can catch fire quickly, and sparks can find their way into your pockets.

Take Care with the Tanks

You're going to be working with oxygen tanks, and other compressed gases, which can be hazardous if handled improperly. When working with your tanks, always make sure the safety caps are in place before you move them. It's also important that you conduct daily inspections of your tanks to ensure that the safety valves are clean and in good repair.
